Cold plunge or cold-water immersion involves partially or totally submerging yourself in cold water for a brief period of time. Icy water can have a positive effect on recovery after exercise because it causes the blood vessels to narrow, which slows blood flow and reduces swelling and soreness. Cold plunge has also been shown to help build resiliency, restore balance to the nervous system, and improve cognitive function and mood.
First-time cold-water plungers typically start with 30 seconds to a minute and may work up to three minutes at a time once they’ve gotten used to the practice.

Benefits of Cold Plunge

  • Reduces muscle damage. Cold water removes inflammation that can occur after physically challenging activities, reducing soreness and helping to restore physical performance.
  • Improves breathing and recovery. The shock of cold forces you to inhale more deeply to combat stress. This opens the lungs to enhance oxygen intake, increase energy, and support muscle recovery.
  • Boosts metabolism. Short bursts of cold exposure temporarily stimulate metabolism as the body burns calories to maintain core body temperature. This promotes the conversion of white fat to the metabolically active brown fat, which burns more energy.
  • Supports hormonal balance. Cold water exposure helps regulate the thyroid and adrenal glands, and also promotes sperm production.
